Pascal
Mesnier* is a musician specialized
in resophonic guitars, based in Paris.
His path is the classic route from passion to professionalism.
After exploring in depth a startling range of acoustic blues and
folk style all centered on the slide,he has become an in-demand
accompanist and soloist on the European scene.
From 1976 to 1981 he studied acoustic guitar blues at the American
Center with Alain Giroux (the French Big Bill Broonzy)
At the end of this period he became impassioned by the slide guitar
in all its forms:Hawaiian, blues, and calypso among other genres,
bottleneck and lap steel techniques.
Cyril Lefebvre, a French lap steel master and contemporary
composer, was his teacher.Also
in 1991, he met Michael Lewis, who later became the founder
of :
"Fine Resophonic Guitars®"
(and a builder of instruments for Eric Clapton and others).
Pascal Mesnier was his first client, for the re-edition of the 1927
tricone model.
A collaboratiion began in which Pascal became Fine Resophonic's
demonstrator for numerous festivals and shows in Europe, including
the Guitar Festival Wiesloch (Germany), the London
Guitar Show (U.K) and Cognac Blues Passion (France). He
played with many numerous masters of the blues: Louisiana Red,
Michael Messer,Guy Davis,Roy Bookbinder,Perry Foster, Lazy Lester...
He got noticed, and was invited to play in numerous stage productions
and films
(like "Les chercheurs d'or", by Marc Simenon.)
In
1992 he created the duo "Lazybones"
with harp player Alain Messier, and embarked on tours of
café-clubs and festivals, like"Blues-à-gogo"
in Le Havre.
In 1996 Pascal was invited to perform at the resophonic festival
"National Breakdown" at Birkenhead (U.K).
There he met John Dopyera Jr., son of the creator of the
Dobro® and National® guitars,
and became the friend and jam partner of Michael Messer,
arguably one of the best living slide blues players.
The duo became and remains to this day one of Mesnier's favorite
ensemble forms: acoustic blues with Patrice Boudot-Lamot,
electric boogie with Mark Lee Hunter.
Recently he began playing the resophonic mandolin, and is working
on his first CD.
